New wishlist website launched
29th November 2006
Sorry for the lack of posts recently but I was working towards the launch of a new website. We launched yesterday so look forward to some posts and comments surrounding what I learnt while building the site. But first, the site itself.
The site is called Giefan.com. It’s a universal wishlist site. That is, a site for creating and managing wishlists. The items in the wishlists may be from anywhere - online stores, offline stores, or wherever. Your friends can promise gifts from your list, thus preventing other friends from buying the same thing, and then buy them from anywhere, including the place you found the item if you found it online (a link is provided). The site has all sorts of extras for managing lists of your friends and telling people about your wishlist. It also has a tool, in the form of a bookmarklet, for easily adding items to your wishlist while surfing the web.
As with any site, there’s a lot of features planned for addition later. For example, where it can, the bookmarklet auto-completes the form to add the product to your wishlist. At other sites you have to complete the form yourself, but every day I’m adding more stores to the list of those where auto-complete works. We also plan to add multiple giftlists per person, shared giftlists, product searches, an API, and various other features.
At this stage, however, we need feedback on what’s good and bad about the site. It’s just in time for the Christmas present wishlist so if you could try it out and give some feedback that would be great. You can feedback through the comments form below of use the contact page on Giefan. And if you want to see a sample wishlist, here’s mine. Thanks everyone.
Oh, and the name. Giefan is one possible spelling of the Old-English for give.

Nice idea, only had a very quick look but seems promising. One thing I would request is some form of integrated search engine. This would allow a third means of finding products to add to the wishlist, fill out the (fairly long) form, add the button go to a search engine and find it, or just type in the search there and then and add from search results. Google aggregator is an excellent demonstration of this for adding rss feeds. E.g. I type in big room blog and I’m offered to add your feed from the results
